High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE)
At Harrington Street Public School, all students, regardless of background or personal circumstances, have access to learning programs that meet their learning needs and support to aspire to, and achieve, personal excellence. High Potential and Gifted students can come from a diverse range of backgrounds.
High potential
High potential students are those whose potential exceeds that of students of the same age in one or more domains. Their potential may be assessed as beyond the average range across any domain. They may benefit from an enriched or extended curriculum and learning opportunities beyond the typical level of students the same age.
Gifted
Gifted students’ potential significantly exceeds that of students of the same age in one or more domains. They may benefit from an extended curriculum and learning opportunities significantly beyond the typical level of students the same age.
Highly gifted
Gifted students’ potential significantly exceeds that of students of the same age in one or more domains. They may benefit from an extended curriculum and learning opportunities significantly beyond the typical level of students the same age.
The Four Domains of High Potential and Gifted Education

Intellectual
The intellectual domain of potential refers to natural abilities in processing, understanding, reasoning, and the transfer of learning.

Physical
The physical domain of potential refers to natural abilities in muscular movement and motor control.

Creative
The creative domain of potential refers to natural abilities in imagination, invention and originality.

Social-Emotional
The social-emotional domain of potential refers to natural abilities in self-management and relating to and interacting with others.
Our High Potential and Gifted Education Opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
At Harrington Street Public School, HPGE is embedded into outr everyday practice. We find the potential and help to grow it into something powerful.
- Teachers identify students' learning needs in the classroom and use evidence-informed teaching practices to challenge and extend students. We provide learning pathways, including enrichment programs and acceleration.
- Our supportive classroom environments promote a sense of belonging and encourage risk-taking, creativity and collaboration.
- Groups are flexible, students take lead roles, and feedback is strengths-based with clear goals and self-assessment.
- Our teachers engage in professional learning to support the diverse needs of all students, including our high potential and gifted learners
Every student is individual, so opportunities are flexible and diverse.
- Students deepen strengths through a wide range of excurricular opportunities in all 4 domains of HPGE.
- Teachers support students at all levels to develop their talents and provde opportunities to grow.
Our students participate in a wide range of statewide programs to extend and enrich student potential.
- Students participate in opportunities such as DoE Game Changer Challenge, APSMO Maths Olympiad, Premier’s Spelling Bee, Premier’s Multicultural Public Speaking, PSSA, sporting events all the way up to the National level, music programs, art competitions and many more.
- Statewide and NSW Department of Education support is available for high potential and gifted students, and we help with entries, preparation and reflection so every experience feeds back into learning.

Alana and Megan, Year 6, Public Speaking
Alana and Megan have achieved outstanding results with their public speaking. Both girls show execptional talent in this competetive skill.
Megan represented the zone at the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking South Western Sydney Reiginonal Final.
Alana represented Harrington Street at the Fairfield Network Public Speaking Competition where she received at Highly Commendable Medal for Stage 3.

Deucaleon, Year 6, Rugy League Opens State Championships
Congratulations to Deucaleon 6D and his NSW team on placing third in the Rugby League Opens State Championships!

Collaboratively Designed Indigenous Artwork
Artist, Michael Fardon, came to HSPS to collaborate with our Indigenous students and student leaders. Together they brainstormed the animals and features unique to our local area, and designed individual artworks using these ideas.
Michael worked with the student designs and input, and our school colours to create an Indigenous inspired artwork for HSPS.

HSPS Chess Team
Our HSPS Chess Team have all proven to be formidable chess players!
These students represented our school at the semi finals of the inter-school chess competition and came first overall!
A special mention goes to Eric (Year 2) who placed second individually, and Henry (Year 6) who placed first.

Jardii and Cassius, Year 6, NSW Rugby League
Congratulations NSW and our Cassius & Jardii!
After a tense grand final in the 2024 School Sport Australia Rugby League Championships, with both NSW and QLD tied on 24 points, the premiership was shared and so both teams are winners!

Emerson, Year 6, Visual Arts
Our very talented artist, Emerson, won FIRST PRIZE in the Capture Fairfield Visual Arts & Photography Competition, Visual Arts - Primary section! The competition was organised by Fairfield City Council, with the theme 'Love where you Live'.
Emerson's artwork is titled 'Embrace Beyond the Gates'.
"Everyday, as I walk through the gate of friendship, I feel a sense of belonging. I find art enjoyable because whenever I draw, creativity reaches out for me and once I start, I can never stop", says Emerson.

Ethan and Alex, Year 4 and 5, Cadet Corps
What an amazing experience for Ethan and Alex who travelled to Normandy, France to represent Australia and the Riverwood Hornets in the Cadet Corps marching band competition.
